KABUL (SW) – Leading political figures on Sunday urged President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to halt the formation of new government amid political crisis in the country.
This was said in a joint statement by former president Hamid Karzai, and Mohammad Younis Qanuni, Abdul Rab Rasul Sayyaf and Mohammad Karim Khalili, who are busy mediating to resolve disputes between president Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, ‘president of the inclusive government’.
These political figures have also called on Abdullah to extend the ten-day deadline he had set for resolving the dispute.
"We suggest that Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani relinquishes the appointment of government officials for an appropriate period of time, and Dr. Abdullah extended the deadline he set to reach an agreement," the statement added.
Abdullah had set a seven-day deadline for resolving political disputes with the mediation of the country's political leaders. This deadline expired on Saturday. Close aides to him on Saturday warned the ‘president of inclusive government’ would move ahead with a parallel cabinet if the impasse continued.
Meanwhile, president Ghani has nominated foreign minister, information and culture minister, head of the National Directorate of Security, governor for Herat and mayor for Kabul city.
