Political climate in Pakistan heats-up

ISLAMABAD (SW): Authorities in Pakistan's have banned political gatherings and other public demonstrations in the capital Islamabad amid calls for massive anti-government rally by the opposition.

Imran Khan, leading opposition leader has vowed to 'lock down' the country’s capital on November 02 to protest against the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's off-shore accounts revealed in the Panama Papers. Pakistani Prime Minister is facing mounting pressure from the opposition after few of his family members were named as holders of offshore bank accounts in leaked financial documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. Sharif has defended himself, and the matter is also scheduled to be heard at the country’s Supreme Court on November 1.

Imran Khan urged the country’s Supreme Court on Monday to take notice of the authorities ‘high-handedness. Speaking to journalists at his residence in Islamabad, Khan alleged that his party workers were being kidnapped and not arrested. “I demand that the Supreme Court take suo moto notice. These are abductions and not arrests. They are robbing people of their democratic rights,” Khan said.

Raheemullah Yousufzai, a Pakistani journalist, told Salam Watandar that the political climate is heating-up. He added that the Parvez Khatak, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakthunkwa province has also marched towards Islamabad along with thousands of PTI supporters to join the protest. Yousufzai added that Khatak and other PTI leaders have vowed to break all the barriers and enter Islamabad.

Similar reports have emerged from southern Queeta city. Abdul Razaq Barq, Queeta-based correspondent for Salam Watandar has reported that the law enforcement agencies are not allowing PTI supporters to leave for Islamabad. Other parties like the Pakistani Peoples Party (PPP) and Minhaj-ul-Quraan party led by Tahir-ul-Qadri have also pushing the Pakistani Premier to be accountable in this case.
