KABUL (SW): Police in the Balkh province have been put on alert amid growing rift between the Arg (Presidential Palace) and Atta Mohammad Noor, the Chief Executive Officer of the Jamiat-e-Islami party who has been removed from his post as governor of the province.
Two days ago, the Arg announced it has approved a resignation tendered by Noor from his post as governor, a move that irked Noor and his party mates in Jamiat. The former government claimed his resignation was conditional with the success of negotiations with the Presidential Palace, and since that ended without any outcome, the resignation became void.
Meanwhile, Abdul Razaq Qaderi, deputy chief for security in the province, has said up to 600 policemen have been deployed to ensure safety and security of foreign diplomatic missions, public offices and the citizens. He said in coordination with the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS), no one would be allowed to harm peace and security.
The deputy security chief said presence of illegally armed men remains a concern. He added hundreds of arms have been distributed among men by different parties in the previous years.
The news about resignation of Atta Mohammad Noor has sparked concerns in the province. Mohammad Afzal Hadeed, chief of the provincial council, also acknowledged the fact that illegally armed men are present in the province, and it is a concern.
A day earlier, Noor told a gathering of his supporters that he would act for his ‘legitimate defense’ if pushed to resign by the government.
