Police officers charged for rape

GHAZNI (SW) : Hundreds of residents of Jaghori district in Ghazni province have accused local police officers of sexually assaulting two women.

Hassan Reza Yousefi, a representative of the Jaghori people in the provincial council, said that two bodyguards of the district police chief had been arrested on charges of raping two young women.

 Protesters gathered in front of the district building to demand the removal of the police chief, the head of anti-crime branch and the district governor of Jaghori.

 

Yousefi said protesters accused the officers of neglecting their duties and warned to continue their protests if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry announced the termination of the district police commander and head of anti-crime branch.

Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said the two have been called for investigation the two accused officers in the district were detained and put under serious interrogation.

According to him, a delegation has been sent from Kabul to Jaghori district to investigate the incident.

Rahmatullah Shafaq, a resident of Jaghori, told Salam Watandar that angry protesters had gathered in front of the district building. According to him, the police fired shots into the air to prevent people from entering the district administration compound.

Jaghouri residents say the district governor is working with tribal elders to persuade people to calm down. According to public sources, one protester was killed and two others were injured in the shelling.
