Police blamed for violence against women in Nuristan

10/12/2016

PARUN (SW): Members of the police force are blamed for up to 30 percent cases of violence against women in the Nuristan province.

According to the provincial directorate of women affairs, despite the fact that members of the police force are directly involved in numerous cases of violence against women, no action has been taken against them. Zahida Faizan, director for women affairs department told Salam Watandar that this year alone up to 55 cases of violence against women have been recorded in the province. She noted that 16 such cases have been lodged against members of the police force. Zahiba blamed that some policemen are also involved in cases of women escaping from their homes.

The directorate of women affairs has made it clear that their scope of study and registering cases is limited only to a number of relatively safe districts and the provincial capital while no data on cases of violence against women is available from restive districts like the Kamdesh, Bargmatal, Mandol and Want Waigal.

Saadullah Paindazoy, chief of the provincial council agrees with the allegations leveled against the policemen in regard to violence against women.

Meanwhile, Hafiz Abdul Qayume, the provincial governor discards these allegations. He said no such evidence is available that backs these claims. The governor added that young men and women escape from their homes on their own choices. Ikramuddin Saree, the police chief in the province said that the police personnel have no role to play in cases of love birds escaping from their homes.
