GHOR (SW): An endemic pneumonia outbreak in Ghor province has claimed the lives of over 50 children in nine months.
Juma Gul Yaqubi, director for the public hospital in Ghor, told Salam Watandar that the harsh cold winter combined with lack of proper care of vulnerable children led to the tragic situation. As per information provided by the Ghor public hospital, a total of 4700 people have been affected by pneumonia, out of which 58 children have lost their lives to the disease.
Medical sources also blamed the fact that the children in Ghor have not been properly vaccinated while as poverty and malnurishment have also contributed to make situation grim. Many children here are said to be affected by pneumonia and measles.
Ghulam Nabi Yagana, director public health in the province, said in this regard that up to fifty per cent of children in Ghor have not been vaccinated against pneumonia that is why so many lives have been lost. He feared the death toll could be even higher considering the fact that data from many faraway remote areas is not available.
