Plan to issue biometric identity cards in limbo

25/09/2016

KABUL (SW): As the National Unity Government (NUG) nears completing its second year, the citizens are yet to see the promise in regard to receiving the biometric identity cards fulfilled.

Political analysts believe that the process of issuing these cards has slowed down due to interferences and political meddling.

Analyst Ferdows Kawosh told Salam Watandar that this is entirely a technical process but the NUG leaders have postponed it due to ethnic and political differences. Ahmad Saidi, another political analyst, claimed that the NUG leaders have done nothing for the country so far except fighting over more power and perks. He claimed that according to the Constitution, both the President and the CEO are ‘illegitimate’, and they have failed to implement the political agreement that led to the formation of the NUG.

Meanwhile, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, the deputy spokesperson for the President, have asserted that many points of the political agreement have successfully been implemented. He further said that the NUG leaders are committed to completely abide by the agreement. Murtazawi added that soon the electoral reforms law and the population management law would be signed in line with the agreement.

It is vital to note that issuing the biometric identity cards, holding Loya Jirga (grand council) for the Constitution amendment, establishing a new post of the prime minister and reforming the electoral system are the main points of the political agreement.
