HERAT (SW): Dozens of women’s rights activists, civil society activists and a number of religious scholars gathered to condemn the public lashing of 22-year-old Suraya in Takhar by staging a reenactment of the public lashing.
The religious scholars said that the desert court or public lashing does not have a legal and religious basis. The protesters demanded the arrest of the perpetrators of violence against Suraya.
The protesters in a statement urged the government to stop violence against women.
A group of angry men brutally lashed Suraya a few days ago, while violently punching and kicking her until she lost consciousness. The video of 22-year-old Suraya being publically lashed by a group of men in Takhar province went viral on social media causing an uproar.
The incident occurred in the village of Rabat Hamdin in Chahab district of Takhar, under the control of the government.
