
KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday met the U.S Vice President Mike Pence on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference in Germany.
In a statement issued by the presidency, VP Pence reiterated Washington’s resolve not to let Afghanistan become bastion for the terrorists again. It added the two leaders discussed the Trump Administration’s South Asia policy, peace process and the electoral reforms.
It added Pence hailed the leadership of the Afghan government and enduring partnership between Kabul and Washington. The U.S Vice President also hailed moves aimed at reforms in the electoral commission and the consultative Loya Jirga in connection with the peace process, it noted, adding Washington pledged full support for elections in Afghanistan.
President Ghani said on the occasion the war in Afghanistan is not a U.S war, and the Afghan security and defense forces are on the forefront of global war against terrorism. He stressed the ongoing talks for peace should be aimed at sustainable peace in Afghanistan.
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel also met President Ghani during the MSC. According to the presidency, Chancellor assured President Ghani Berlin would support Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process.
A group of U.S Senators also met President Ghani to push against any sudden drawdown of troops from Afghanistan. These Senators assured Ghani the exit strategy for troops would be formulated with suggestions and ground realities in Afghanistan.
