KABUL (SW): On a surprise visit to Kabul, the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence stressed upon the importance of fair and free elections in Afghanistan.
Hailing the achievements of the National Unity Government (NUG), VP Pence reiterated Washington’s lasting support for Afghanistan. Highlighting the government's achievements in bringing reforms on various fronts, Afghan President Ghani told the visiting U.S. dignitary that ties between Kabul and Washington are based on mutual interests and strategy, and have strengthened. Ghani also hailed the new U.S. Strategy for South Asia, and pronounced it effective in combating terrorism, and promoting regional cooperation.
Pence also issued a stern warning to Afghanistan's neighbor Pakistan for allegedly harboring terrorists. “Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with the United States, and Pakistan has much to lose by continuing to harbour criminals and terrorists," Penec said addressing U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
