Peace talks with the Taliban made conditional

29/10/2019

KABUL (SW) – The National Security Adviser, Hamdullah Mohib, on Tuesday shared contours of the government’s new peace strategy at a presser here on Tuesday.

He said the launch of peace talks has now been made conditional to at least a month-long ceasefire in a bid to prove the Taliban leader’s control over his forces. He added guarantees would be sought from the Taliban and Pakistan against not extending the war or keeping the terrorists’ training camps.

He added the Taliban need to explain their ties to Pakistan and the two need to stop killing innocent Afghans. Muhib said the new seven-point peace plan has three parts addressing negotiations, regional consensus and internal good governance.

The NSA said the plan has already been shared with the U.S., EU and other foreign partners, and its implementation has commenced. Muhib said soon Kabul would host a gathering of local elders and another moot to host international partners to seek support for this plan.

In the meantime, experts have shared different views in regard to this plan.

Security analyst, Akbar Jan Polad, argued that it is important that the political and civil society groups closely monitor implementation of this plan. He said there are chances of the Taliban approving of this plan since the group has faced military defeats in a number of provinces and Pakistan too is faced with serious economic constraints.

However, former Taliban-era official, Sayed Akber Aaga, argued the Taliban are only seeking to ink the stalled peace plan with the U.S. He added the Taliban are still standing firm on their previous stance.

This comes as a number of Afghan politician and a number of regional countries are pushing for revival of the peace talks.
