KABUL (SW) – Syed Akbar Aagha, head of the Afghanistan Salvation Council, demanded that the peace process should be given priority over the proposed presidential elections.
Addressing a press conference here, Aagha said the ongoing peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban in Qatar might extend to further rounds hence the elections should be halted. He stressed first there should be a peace deal that should be followed by further discussions about the system of future governance.
Head of the Afghanistan Salvation Council said he has shared these views with Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation. Aagha said Khalilzad asked him to share this view with the masses. In a statement, this council also urged the Afghan government and the Taliban to release each other’s prisoners. The statement further said reports suggest the government has no control over most of the areas therefore elections means an ‘imposed project’.
Prior to this, a number of presidential candidates also demanded that the peace process should be given priority. Salam Watandar wished to have the views of the presidency, but to no avail. The government has time and again insisted that elections would be held on time.
