HERAT CITY (SW) – Khudadad Saleh, head of the Ulema Council in the western zone, on Tuesday stressed the peace process should be ‘freed from the clutches of politicians’.
He said this addressing a moot in Herat province. In his remarks, Mawlawi Saleh said as long as the process is confined to a few ‘ambassadors of peace’, it cannot yield positive results. He did not name anyone specific in this connection.
He called for a ceasefire between the government and Taliban as well as the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan. Mawlawi Saleh blamed foreign countries for fueling violence and unrest in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, a former Taliban-era official, Syed Akbar Aagha, said ceasefire is not likely to feature in the proposed renewed peace talks between the insurgents and the U.S. He added ceasefire would be the first step after the signing of peace deal between the U.S. and Taliban and resumption of intra-Afghan talks.
This comes amid the renewed peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban in the Qatari capital, Doha.
