KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and the Chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday met with members of the government’s peace negotiating team.
The Presidential Palace said in a statement about this meeting before the peace negotiators embark on a journey to Qatar for talks with the Taliban. During the meeting, the President called the negotiating team a "national team" and said that this team has the strong support of the government and the people of Afghanistan.
The President stated at the meeting that the government has fulfilled all its commitments in regard to the peace process that the international community expected. He called the release of Taliban prisoners a "clear proof" of the government's commitment to peace.
Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, said that the Afghan government has shown its determination in the peace process. He stressed the Taliban must also show commitment towards peace.
Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai, the head of the negotiating team, said the peace negotiators would strive for lasting peace in the country.
According to the presidency, the negotiating team is scheduled to visit Qatar on Thursday to participate in the intra-Afghan talks with the Taliban.
