MONITORING (SW) – The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said peace can only be restored in Afghanistan through intra-Afghan peace talks.
He said this addressing a press conference during a trip to Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday. About a meeting between a Taliban delegation and a number of Afghan politicians in Moscow today, Lavrov said Russia should strive to end war and bring peace.
He charged the US was trying to seize control of this dialogue so as to hold it behind closed doors.
The two-day conference in Moscow would be attended by a 10-member Taliban delegation and former officials from the Kabul government. The delegation from Afghanistan, which also include three women, claim they would not undermine the stability of the current system in Afghanistan, and would instead try to compel the Taliban to ensure safeguarding the gains of the past two decades in the peace process.
