KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) of the parliament on Wednesday rejected the only woman nominated as the Supreme Court judge in the history of this country.

Anisa Rasooli was proudly nominated by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to the apex court last week. The house voted on her faith today but sadly for Rasooli, 21 female members of the house were absent that could have made a difference.

Out of the total 249 members, 192 members took part in the voting. 88 members voted in favor, 83 voted against her, 14 abstained and seven votes got rejected.

The house approved Syed Yosuf Haleem to become one of the Supreme Court judge as 103 members voted in his favor, 73 voted “No”, 13 abstained and four votes got rejected.

Separately, the house showed green signal to the nominees for the Director of Da Afghanistan Bank (Central bank). Khalilullah Siddiqui bagged 100 “Yes” votes, 76 voted against him, ten abstained and seven votes were rejected.

With this, President Ghani’s 25 member cabinet that has two additional seats of Directors i.e. one each for the Central Bank and spy agency National Directorate for Security is almost complete. Only the Minister of Defense’s seat remains vacant and has been temporarily occupied by an interim minister.

Ghani took the charge of his office in September last year.
