ASADABAD (SW) – The governor of Kunar province on Wednesday blamed Pakistan for hindering development projects in the province.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for Kunar River boundary walls project in the province, Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal, said multiple surveys have been completed for the major Sara Taq Dam in the province, but Pakistan’s alleged constant meddling continues to hinder execution of this project. He said the intelligence agencies of Pakistan are stationed in the province who not only continue to hinder execution of the development projects, but also promote divisions among the local population.
It is believed Pakistan fears shortfall in flow of water in case dams are constructed on Kunar River.
He vowed the government is determined to execute a number of projects for water management here. Governor Mirzakwal said the Menagay Dam would soon be inaugurated during the celebrations for 100th year of Independence later this year. He added work would soon commence on a third dam in the province.
The locals are equally concerned about the constant meddling by Pakistan here.
Two members of the provincial council, Jamaluddin Sayar and Ziaur Rehman Allahyar, told Salam Watandar that a number of Afghanistan’s neighbors are against execution of major development projects here.
There is an old power station in Kunar that produces a little over 300 kilowatts of electricity. Besides this, at least 90 per cent of development work has been completed on the Menagay Dam while surveys have been completed for two more dams here.
