Over 3 million addicted to drugs in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW): Salamat Azimi, minister for Counter Narcotics has said that as many as 3.6 million drug addicts in the country.

Speaking at a conference in line with Anti-Narcotics Week in the country, she said that last year, 65 percent of opium in the world was cultivated in Afghanistan, which in comparison to the year before, showed 11 percent decrease. She said that poverty, lack of awareness, insecurity and illiteracy are the main reasons behind the rise in the number of drug addicts in the country.

The Second Vice President, Sarwar Danesh, dubbed the armed militants as the biggest smugglers of narcotics.

“Narcotics provides the main budget for the armed militants to impose war in Afghanistan. It sponsors terrorism and ensures the income for terrorists and smuggler:, he said.

He added that despite the fact that the country is grappled with many challenges but the government would use all available resources to eliminate this menace.
