KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has noted at least 179, 813 units of blood have been collected through donation drives in the past year.
Ahmad Jan Naeem, deputy minister at the MoPH, said on Sunday a healthy person between the ages of 18 and 60 with weight not less than 50 kg can donate blood. He informed the 179, 813 units of blood is stored at the central blood bank.
Himmat and Mohammad Rafi, two Kabul residents, have been donating blood on regular basis for the past many years now. They told Salam Watandar blood donation is a noble act that can save many lives.
According to health experts, donated plasma is replaced after 2–3 days, and red blood cells are replaced by bone marrow into the circulatory system at a slower rate, on average 36 days in healthy adult males. In one study, the range was 20 to 59 days for recovery. These replacement rates are the basis of how frequently a donor can donate blood.
The central blood bank in Kabul usually supplies blood to victims of security and traffic incidents, needy women during pregnancies and cancer patients in need of blood.
