KABUL (SW) – More than 100 Taliban insurgents have been killed in the past 24 hours, various corps of the Afghan National Army said on Friday.
According to the 209 – Shaheen and 217 – Pamir Corps, in Balkh and Kunduz, the Taliban suffered casualties following the group's offensive on security checkpoints. "Taliban fighters in these provinces launched large-scale attacks and offensive plans on the positions of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, which failed," the 209th Shaheen Corps said in a news release on Friday morning.
It said that 52 Taliban fighters were killed and 26 others were wounded in the four provinces – Balkh, Faryab, Jawzjan and Sar-e-Pul. The corps command said two key Taliban commanders, Abdul Fattah Awqafi and Mullah Karim, are among those killed in the clashes.
The clashes took place in Khaja Sabzposh district of Faryab province, Sayad and Sancharak districts of Sar-e-Pul province, Faizabad and Aqcha districts of Jawzjan province and Shulgara district of Balkh province.
The statement added that several villages in Khaja Sabzposh district of Faryab and Siah Ab village of Shulgara district of Balkh province have been cleared of Taliban fighters and some weapons and other equipment have fallen into the hands of government forces.
The 217 – Pamir Corps in Kunduz said in a news release that 38 Taliban fighters, including several of their commanders, have been killed and 16 others wounded in clashes between the Taliban and security forces. It said that the Taliban had launched their offensive on the Kunduz – Khanabad that was thwarted.
The Taliban have not yet commented.
Similarly, at least 24 Taliban fighters were killed and five others were wounded in clashes between Taliban fighters and security forces last night, said Mohammad Sadiq, head of the 205 – Atel Corps’ press office. According to him, during the clashes, some light and heavy weapons of the Taliban fighters fell into the hands of the security forces.
