Opinion: Ghani dismisses top officials from Hamid Karzai Airport

25/06/2016

KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani dismissed head of Hamid Karzai Airport as well as commander of border police over negligence in duty.

The President took the decision after he received the report of a monitoring commission into the affairs of the Hamid Karzai International Airport.

If similar incident could take place in any other countries it wouldn’t be a big issue since it is not the job of a president to take care of almost everything himself.

It is also not logical to compare incidents and events taking place here with the ones in other countries because it goes without saying that everything is clear where we are standing and where we are heading.

There is something that  can't be overlooked and that is the dissatisfaction of the President with the way staff treat the passengers at the airport.

It is good that the President thinks about how the staff at the airport should behave with people and is so promising but it leaves one question that how the President has singled out to sack only the officials at the airport.

This approach should not be limited to the airport but it should also include other government institutions and offices. Part of the endemic corruption in the country is mainly due to the fact that the officials in public offices don’t feel accountable and responsible.

The President’s move should be appreciated and other officials are also expected to do the same and pay attention to people’s problems.

As was said above, this should not be limited only to the Hamid Karzai Airport but other government organization should also be treated just the way the President dismissed the officials from the airport.

Is the President ready to take such determined decision when it comes to other issues? If the answer is yes, then it can breed hope, which will be an effective step toward countering corruption.
