KABUL (SW): Latest findings by the Central Statistics Organization of Afghanistan (CSO) revealed on Tuesday that only 15 per cent population in a number of provinces have access to clean drinking water.
The study has been conducted in the capital Kabul, Kandahar, Balkh, Nangarhar, Herat, Khost, Daykundi, Badakhshan, Samangan and Kapisa provinces for dangers of E coli bacteria.
Haseebullah Mohad, deputy director of CSO, told the gathering in this connection that more than 84 per cent of water in these provinces is polluted with this bacteria. He added that around 30 per cent residents in urban areas and only around 10 per cent in rural areas in these provinces have access to clean drinking water.
Syed Attaullah Saeedzay, director at the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), said on the occasion that the contaminated water is causing serious health concerns in these areas of the country. He particularly raised concerns over the quality of water in Balkh and Samangan provinces.
The study titled ‘WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene’ has been completed in five months.
