Old currency notes irk Kabul residents

22/02/2019

KABUL (SW) – The abundance of old currency notes in the capital Kabul has irked literally all from road-side vendors to taxi drivers and shoppers at upscale markets.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of Kabul dwellers said they are faced with serious troubles that often results in quarrel due to the old currency notes in circulation.

Qais, one such roadside vendor in the Pashtunistan Square, said there are many old currency notes in circulation, but no one wants to take them. Ramen, another trader in downtown Kabul, said when they take such old currency notes from the customers, no one, even banks, are willing to take them back.

This leaves no other option than trading these currency notes for half their value at the currency exchang, they said.

Kabul residents want the central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank, to collect all the old currency notes.

When contacted, Emal Aashur, spokesman for the DAB, said these old currency notes – mainly those with relatively smaller value AFN 10 to 100 – can be brought to pay utility bills, taxes and other tariffs. He advised citizens to refer to the DAB instead of selling their money with lesser value to currency traders.

A while ago, the DAB had warned those trading the old currency notes with lesser value would face legal actions.
