KABUL (SW): De Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat, the main electricity distribution company said on Tuesday (May 12, 2015) government institutions, officials and powerful individuals owe the company more than a million afghanis in bills.
Mirwais Aalimi, business manager DABS told journalists in Kabul that a number of people and organizations have not paid their electricity bills for years.
As per the list provided to media, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mines owed DABS 203 million afs, Ministry of Interior 128 million afs, Ministry of Public Health MoPH 95.3 afs, Ministry of Information Technology and Boradhcasting 66.1 million, Ministry of Education 45.7 million and the Department of Traffic 407 million afs.
Basir Azizi, spokesman for the Attorney General’s office, said on the occasion that legal actions would be taken against the defaulters. He described three sorts of actions to be taken against the defaulter. In the first phase, electricity connections would be cut-off, then they would be made to pay and finally they would be investigated over breaching the law.
DABS gave the defaulters ten days to pay the bills or be prepared for the consequences.
Some 33 percent of the country has electricity available 40 percent of which is produced in Afghanistan while the rest is imported from Turkemenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran. The imported electricity cost some 230 million dollars annually.
