KABUL (SW): On Tuesday’s session of the Masharano Jirga (upper house), senators expressed anger over Nangarhar University students hoisting militants’ flags in a demonstration.
Farhad Sakhi, a senator said this act was a serious defiance against the government and should be seriously dealt with. “Our children are sacrificing on daily basis (due to terrorism) and we do not want the schools and universities to turn into militancy centers”, he said.
Students in the Nangarhar University have been protesting for days, blaming the local authorities for denying them their due rights and allying with the mafia in the province. The students asserted that the government has not paid them the monthly stipend and other privileges for the past six months.
Mohaiudin Munsif, another MJ member urged the President and his CEO to pay serious attention to the issues. He said that the provincial authorities in Nangarhar should be made accountable for the rally that saw the militants’ flag emerge.
The Ministry of Higher Education has said in a statement about the rally that though students do have the right for civil activism for their right but movements that undermine the national interests and order are not allowed. It added the Ministry would curb any such movement.
Mohammad Alam Ezidyar, a MJ member said on the floor of the house on Tuesday that the incident should not be ignored. He urged the house’s security and higher education affairs committees to probe it.
