KABUL (SW): A number of political commentators believe the National Unity Government (NUG) has nothing to offer at the forthcoming Brussels Conference on Afghanistan in terms of electoral reforms in the country.
Jandad Spenghar, a civil society activist told Salam Watandar that the government has not met the promises it made in regard to the reforms. He stressed that the NUG has literally nothing to offer in Brussels to attract support form the international community. Speaking to Salam Watandar, Hasib Mutarif, member of the Free & Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) said that the Afghan government has not fulfilled the vows it had made. The government has not done anything relating to electoral reforms so far, he added.
Critics charge that the President has only sent a decree for electoral reforms to the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) and formed Special Commission for Electoral Reforms.
Meanwhile, the government officials claim that the NUG has met most of the promises it made, and the leaders are well prepared to present a strong case for Afghanistan at the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan.
Shah Hussain Murtazawi, the deputy spokesperson for the President told Salam Watandar that the government has many achievements. He went on to say that the election commission with its new members would soon begin its work, and the parliamentary elections together with district and provincial councils’ elections would be held soon.
