‘NUG has not kept the promises it made at Brussels Conference’

22/11/2018

KABUL (SW) – A group of civil society organizations on Thursday claimed the government has failed to implement the pledges it made during the Brussels Conference in 2016.

The civil society activists noted in a statement that the National Unity Government has failed to ensure the rule of law, counter corruption, poverty, or bring peace or electoral transparency. Mohammad Naeem Ayubzada, one of the civil society activists, said the findings by the civil society organizations suggest the NUG has failed to meet the promises it made during the Brussels Conference two years ago.

A statement by the CSOs set to attend the forthcoming Geneva Conference on Afghanistan stated that the civil societies in all 34 provinces of the country long for peace.

In a part of this statement, it is stated that the civil societies want the Afghan government and the international community to strive for good governance, electoral transparency, fight corruption, bring political stability, and promote domestic economy for jobs and stability.

Claiming to be the voice of the people, the CSOs also called for international support to monitor the government. It claimed to have gathered views of 1170 CSOs from all 34 provinces of the country.

Meanwhile, Shah Hussain Murtazavi, spokesman for the president, told Salam Watandar the government has many achievements, particularly in the fields of counter-corruption and legal reforms. He said up to 400 laws have been reviewed and reformed, and up to 15,000 top government officials have documented their assets in a bid to promote transparency.

The Swiss city is set to host the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan on November 27 and 28.
