LASHKARGAH (SW) – Hundreds of Helmand residents gathered in Lashkargah city on Saturday to express support for the peace process while criticizing the government for ignoring the southern parts of the country.

The local elders marked raging war, unemployment and dearth of development projects as the main issues faced by residents of the southern provinces. The participants expressed support for the peace process, and urged the warring sides to give-up arms.

The government was particularly criticized for turning a blind eye towards the southern Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Nimroz and Uruzgan provinces leaving the residents here gripped with multiple troubles. They charged the National Unity Government in its tenure failed to implement a single mega project in southern parts of the country.

A local elder, Abdul Ahad Masoomi, said on the occasion the people know their rights, and have stood up for their rights.

The participants demanded full and relevant representation of the southern provinces in the forthcoming Loya Jirga (consultative grand council).
