NUG grilled over women & child rights

26/09/2016

KABUL (SW): A local rights body has charged the National Unity Government (NUG) for failing to fulfill the promises made in regard to the protection of women and children’s’ rights.

Laal Mohammad Laal, chairman of the Organization for Human Rights in Afghanistan told a press conference here on Monday that the NUG has failed to address these issues in its two years’ term so far. He charged that the government has literally failed to comply with the promises it made with the international community, and the government’s leaders are heading to the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan ‘empty handed’.

According to him, incidents of violence against women are on the rise, children are still coping with hard labor on the streets, enlisted as child soldiers and deprived of basic education. He went on to say that besides this grim situation, the fragile security situation has left deep marks on the lives of ordinary Afghans.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Women Network also grilled the government over its lack of attention in this regard. Roshan Seran, member of the AWN said on the occasion that the government should acknowledge the right of women for high ranking posts, and should consult with them for the implementation of the pledges that are going to be made at Brussels.

Ajmal Hameed, spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, however stressed that ensuring the rights of women and children is among the fundamental pledges that the NUG is going to make in Brussels. He added that in consultation with various corresponding ministries and rights organizations, a comprehensive plan would be chalked and presented in the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan.
