KABUL (SW) – Despite the incorporation of ‘Bacha Bazi’ in the Penal Code, not a single suspect has been trialed in this connection, the National Advocacy Conference for the Prevention of Trafficking in Person was told on Wednesday.
Speakers of the moot criticized the government for alleged failure in curbing this social menace. Najib Zadran Babrakzai, head of child rights section at the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, said on the occasion poor children are particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon.
Samia Sadat, representative of the lawyers association, said though there are laws in place as well as a dedicated commission, but the illegal practice of ‘bacha bazi’ goes unchecked. She said most of the culprits are powerful individuals, and in some cases law enforcement agencies, particularly police, collaborate with the criminals for ‘bacha bazi’.
However, Mohammad Aman Reyazat, head of technical committee against human trafficking and migration, said the government has taken a number of effective steps in this regard. He said information centers are functional in ten border provinces.
