No notable rise in forces’ casualties: MoI

30/10/2016

KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has made it clear that the graph of security forces’ casualties is steady and there is no sudden rise in it.

The MoI said this responding to the latest report by the U.S’ Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). According to the third quarterly report for the year 2016, SIGAR has confirmed 5,523 deaths among the Afghan National Security and Defence Forces (ANSDF) while 9,665 security personnel have been reported wounded.

In the meantime, Siddiq Siddiqi, spokesman for the MoI, said that the casualties among the ANSDF have not seen any significant rise. “The security forces are striving for the peace and stability in the motherland, and casualties among them have not witnessed a notable change, and the sacrifices they have paid are for the freedom and defence against the terrorists”, he said.

Siddiqi stressed that the National Unity Government (NUG) is working hard to bring the graph of casualties down.

In its report, SIGAR has warned that past gains are eroding: poverty, unemployment, violence, out-migration, internal displacement, and the education gender gap have all increased, while services and private investment have decreased in Afghanistan this year.
