KABUL (SW): There is not a single female journalist in four provinces while in some provinces female journalists have nominal presence.

This was stated at a gathering marking the first year since the establishment of Center for the Protection of Afghan Women Journalists (CPAWJ) here on Saturday. The group has conducted a comprehensive study into some 225 media organizations and press freedom institutions across the country.

The study revealed there is not a single female journalist in Nimroz, Uruzgan, Nuristan and Kunar provinces while female journalists have only nominal presence in Khost and Ghor provinces.

Fareeda Nekzad, head of the CPAWJ, said on the occasion there are a total of 1696 females working in media organizations, and 864 of them are working as active journalists. She said an overwhelming majority of female journalists are working in the capital Kabul, followed by Balkh and Herat provinces.

It was noted that social constraints combined with ragging violence and poverty have forced many women and girls to quit jobs in media. However, situation in this regard was seen improving in Balkh province.
