KABUL (SW) – The government made it clear no decision has been made in regard to releasing Anas Haqqani.

This comes as the Taliban named Haqqani as one of 14 Taliban leaders to hold talks with the U.S.

Harun Chakhansuri, spokesman for the Presidential Palace, noted in a tweet that Haqqani remains in prison, and no decision has been made in regard to his release.

“The government is responsible to implement law, and the persons charged with crimes against the people of Afghanistan, would be dealt with on the bases of the laws”, he tweeted. The presidential spokesman assured people justice would be done.

The Taliban have demanded release of Haqqani for talks with the U.S. The team announced by the Taliban for these talks would be led by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai.

Anas Haqqani is one of the key leaders of the Haqqani Network. He is the son of this group’s founder Jalaluddin Haqqani and brother of Sirajuddin Haqqani.
