New governor takes charge in Samangan

AIBAK (SW): Amid tight security arrangements, Abdul Latif Ibrahimi on Tuesday took charge as governor of Samangan province after Abdul Karim Khudam, the ousted governor, agreed to step down.

Salam Watandar reporter from the city has reported that armed men associated with the Hezb-e-Islami and Jamiat-e-Islami were roaming in the city on this occasion. Taimoor Sharan, deputy director at the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG), has said the former governor has stepped down after understanding between the government and his JI party.

It is said the government has promised to name the ousted governor as deputy chief of the High Peace Council (HPC), appoint a JI candidate as deputy governor of Samangan and another one as ambassador in Sweden.

The Turkmen community members from Balkh, Jawzjan, Faryab and Kunduz province on Monday staged protest demonstration against the sacking of governor of Samangan. The Jamiat-e-Islami party had opposed by the Arg (Presidential palace)’s move of sacking the governor.
