KABUL (SW) – The government on Wednesday began free distribution of bread at bakeries for the poor and needy amid lock down in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani announced the bread distribution project would be replicated in other worst affected cities including Herat, Mazar-e Sharif, Kandahar, Kunduz and Jalalabad. “We ask the distinguished Ulama, mayors, neighbourhood/Guzar representatives, tribal elders, civil society organizations and influential figures to extend their cooperation through preparing the roster of the people in need to help the government reach out to them”, he said in a statement.

According to the Kabul Municipality, up to 250,000 needy families would begin receiving free breads in the first phase of the project.

A number of local KM representatives told Salam Watandar that the most needy and marginalized families would benefit from this project.

Arif Rehmani, a Wolesi Jirga (lower house) representative said in this connection that it is pivotal to save the needy people from absolute hunger under current circumstances. He said free bread might not be enough to fight poverty.
