KABUL (SW): As yet another harsh winter approaches, the National Disasters Management Authority (NDMA) has expressed full readiness to safeguard vulnerable communities across the country.

Umar Mohammadi, spokesman for the NDMA, told Salam Watandar AFN 165 million have been dispatched to all 33 provinces except the capital Kabul for the emergency needs in winter. He added a number of international aid agencies have also promised to provide necessary food, medicine and other items of need for the deserving people in winter. Mohammadi said discussions to chalk out details of the contingency plans for this would commence from Tuesday.

Meanwhile, some local officials in different provinces lament that they have not been provided with all necessary items to cop up with the harsh winter.

Mohammad Reza Rifat, director for disasters management in Bamyan, informed safe estimates suggest up to 4600 families would need aid and support during winter. He said the provincial authorities only have a stock of medicine and other items, but food and water remain short.

In Nangarhar, Abdul Basir Sabawoon, director for disasters management, expressed satisfaction over preparations in this regard. He said the provincial authorities have stocks to support up to 10,000 families in need during winter.
