LODON (SW) – The NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has said the Alliance welcomes efforts for ceasefire in Afghanistan, but is not specific on pre-conditions for the restart of peace talks.
He was addressing a presser following the NATO Summit in London on Wednesday.
Responding to a question by the Salam Watandar, he said NATO welcomed efforts to restart the peace talks, and believed a politically negotiated solution in Afghanistan is needed. “I welcome, of course, the efforts for some sort of ceasefire and reduction in violence, but I will not be specific on exact pre-condition for restarting the peace talks”, he clarified.
“We are committed to continue to support Afghanistan because we strongly believe the best way NATO can support peace efforts is to train, assist and advise Afghan security forces so Taliban understands they will never win on the battlefield, they have to sit down and make real serious compromises on the negotiation table”, he said.
The NATO Secretary General said the Alliance will continue to be in Afghanistan and hope the peace process provides with a credible peace deal.
The NATO Summit concluded with nine-point London Declaration. 'We reaffirm our commitment to long-term security and stability in Afghanistan', one point of the London Declaration said.
