CHARIKAR (SW) – NATO’s top military commander in Afghanistan Gen. Scott Miller expressed his condolences to the flood-affected families in Parwan as he toured the worst affected areas.
He said that NATO and Afghan security forces were providing assistance to the families who lost their lives and property due to the floods. The top U.S. commander said the Afghan and NATO security forces are helping the flood-hit families to return to normalcy.
Gen. Miller added the Afghan security forces were leading rescue and clean-up operations and that NATO was providing assistance to displaced families with water, food and medical supplies. NATO has so far distributed first aid to hundreds of families in the province.
During his visit to Parwan, Gen. Miller thanked the people of the province for rescuing the flood victims. "I always tell the Taliban and the world that violence must be reduced," Gen. Miller said as he praised the security forces' efforts to bring peace.
Over 100 people have been killed and nearly 250 injured in floods in the city of Charikar alone.
According to the Ministry for Disaster Management, at least 1500 homes were completely destroyed in the floods.
