KABUL (SW) – The top NATO military commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Scott Miller has called for the need of reduction in violence and building a political path towards peace.
The commander of NATO's Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces – Afghanistan wished the people of Afghanistan a happy Independence Day. “We stand behind your #ANDSF security forces as they secure peace in #Afghanistan. Now is the time to reduce violence and build a political path towards peace”, he said.
NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo also facilitated Afghans on this important day. “Congratulations to all Afghans on their 101st anniversary of independence. We applaud the brave Afghan security forces for securing and safeguarding the Republic of #Afghanistan”, he said in a tweet.
Separately, the EU Envoy to Afghanistan, Roland Kobia also expressed warm wishes in his Independence Day message. “My warm wishes to the many friends and all the people of #Afghanistan for the #IndependenceDay. A day that comes with blood again, attacking people & symbols, but your quest and resilience for peace will prevail”, he tweeted.
At least 14 rockets were fired in various parts of Kabul leaving at least ten people injured during the 101st Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday, the interior ministry said.
This came as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and other top officials were present at the defense ministry to mark the 101st Independence Day celebrations.
