
KABUL (SW) – A landmark clean energy project to produce 340KW of hybrid (solar and hydro) electricity was launched here on Wednesday.
The deal was inked among the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, the UNDP and a private firm. Government officials and diplomats from the Embassy of South Korea attended the signing ceremony. The pilot project would be implemented in Dara-e-Noor district of Nangarhar province.
Mujibur Rehman Karimi, minister for the MoRRD, said on the occasion the project is part of the Sustainable Energy project. He said more than two thousand families would benefit from this project. He added 30 mosques, nine schools and two clinics would also be connected to the electricity grid via this project that would also create jobs for seven thousand people.
Addressing the moot, UNDP country director, Jocelyn Mason, said lack of electricity has left negative impacts on the socio-economic life and trade in Afghanistan.
The project would cost AFN 342 million, and would be funded by the UNDP and the Embassy of South Korea. The project is likely to be completed in 15 months.
Officials vowed to replicate this project in a number of other provinces as well.
