KABUL (SW): A number of civil society activists urged upon the government to name a memorial in the name of Deh Mazang martyrs inside the Arg (Presidential palace) instead of naming the square after them.
Following the deadly twin suicide attacks on protestors at the Deh Mazang square last week, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani declared a day of mourning and named the square after the martyrs. The civil society activists however, said today that this was not fair. They noted that the square was already named after Ghazi Hazrat Nooristani.
Attaullah Hairan, an activist said on the occasion that the President’s decree in this regard fuels ethnic discrimination. He urged the government to reverse the Presidential decree within a week.
Urging upon the Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah to play his role, Hairan charged the President of committing political mistakes.
Haji Saboor, another speaker demanded that a township should be named after the Deh Mazang martyrs.
He added that naming the Deh Mazang square after the martyrs of the Junbish-e-Roshnani (Enlightenment Movement) fuels differences among various ethnic groups.
