KABUL (SW) – Nai – Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan organization on Tuesday urged the government not to sacrifice free press in efforts amid ceasefire in the country.

Mujib Khalwatgar, chief executive of Nai, shared the findings of a study in this connection with journalists. He said the entry of the Taliban rebels in main cities has sparked concerns among masses. He said press editors saw the ‘unplanned’ peace initiative, spontaneous and unconditional ceasefire as threat to the press freedom.

The study is based on interviews with 60 online and video media organizations in Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, and Jalalabad. He said the media professionals remained skeptical and fearful throughout the ceaefire.

Nai urged the government to consider freedom of speech and free speech as ‘red line’ during peace talks.
