KABUL (SW): Officials at the Nai- Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan on Thursday expressed concerns about proposed restrictions over the use of social media in the country.
It was said during a presser today that a number of parliamentarians have urged upon the government to impose restriction on facebook in the country.
Seddiqullah Tawhidi, director of Nai, told journalists that a number of parliamentarians have sent a letter to the Administrative Office of the President (AOP) in this regard.
As per his knowledge, the AOP has shared it with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT). Tawhidi said that the ministry would therefore intentionally try to lower the browsing speed for facebook.
He admitted that a number of individuals and groups spread baseless rumors on the social media sites but it should not be used as an excuse to impose sweeping ban.
Yasin Samim, spokesman for the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, however discarded the charges. He told Salam Watandar that the ministry has not received any letter about imposing restrictions on facebook.
He noted that the quality of internet services in the country are far better compared to many countries in the region.
He added that sometimes, the internet speed gets down due to technical reasons. He added that the freedom of speech is a fundamental right of the citizens in Afghanistan, and no government institution can curb it.
