NAI calls for security of media outlets, workers

KABUL (SW) – The press freedom watchdog, NAI – Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan has urged the interior ministry to take immediate and effective steps in ensuring peace and security of media professionals across the country.

This comes following attacks on two media outlets, Arman Shahar radio and Shahr Banu weekly in Pul-e-Khumri in Baghlan province. According to the editor-in-chief of these media outlets, Syed Azeem Hashimi, an improvised explosive device attack damage their office and inflicted financial losses.

In a statement, NAI asked the Baghlan security command and the National Directorate of Security to investigate the incident.

Baghlan police said this morning that two local media outlets had suffered financial damage following a blast in Pul-e-Khumri. The police said the incident took place at around 8pm on Tuesday. Police has blamed armed rebels for the attack.

Azim Hashemi, the managing director of these media outlets, told Salam Watandar that the glass windows shattered in their office.

Fahim Nikzad, provincial head of the Committee to Protect Journalists in Baghlan, has also called on the security officials to investigate the incident.
