KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Gen. Abdul Raziq, the Kandahar police chief, has claimed a number of Taliban leaders including family members of their late supreme leader Mulla Omar have joined the peace process.
Addressing a press conference late on Saturday, Gen. Raziq said these Taliban leaders have denounced violence, and have joined the peace process. He added that among those who have surrendered include Lutfullah, who had served as deputy defense minister and ambassador to Pakistan during the Taliban rule. The police chief did not provide details about the others.
The police chief said untiring efforts by him, the people and the security forces compelled these Taliban leaders to give-up arms and join the peace process. Gen. Raziq specified that the High Peace Council (HPC) has played no role in it. He urged upon the rest of the Taliban militants to put an end to their terrorist activities, and join the peace process.
The Kandahar police chief said on the occasion extra measures have been taken to ensure a peaceful Eid.
