KABUL (SW): The 26th anniversary of the Mujahedeen’s victory was marked in a ceremony at the Arg (Presidential palace) on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said the strong will and unity among the ranks of the Mujahedeen earned them the historic victory. He said the government is committed to hold free, fair and transparent elections for the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) and district councils.

Ghani said the government would not interfere in the polls, and the parliamentarians should also not interfere. The president emphasized the presidential elections should be held on time, and he would not stay in office for a single day beyond his term.

During the moot, speakers of the Wolesi Jirga and Masharano Jirga (upper house) urged the government to ensure security of the voters’ registration centers. Speaker MJ, Fazal Alhadi Muslimyar, noted a draft law is under consideration that would held person accountable for disrespect to Mujahedeen figures and other respected figures.

The Mujahedeen’s victory in April 1992 to overthrow the government of Dr. Najibullah is marked every year.
