KABUL (SW) – Members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday labelled the proposed draft annual budget as unfair to all the provinces.
Taking part in the debate on the matter, a number of parliamentarians said the proposed budget has allocated significant amounts in the development category to the already well-off provinces rather than focusing on uplifting the least developed ones.
Fatima Azizi, an MP from Kunduz, said the draft budget does not have funds for many projects demanded by the people. Makhdomm Mohammadi, another member of the house, said the proposed budget is unacceptable, and it should be reviewed.
Agreeing with the MPs, speaker Mir Rehmani Rehmani said some provinces have only been granted one development project for the entire year in the draft budget.
When contacted, spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, Abdullah Darman, said the draft budget has been formulated keeping in mid the available resources. He said the MoF lacks means and resources to entertain all demands.
