KABUL (SW) – The foreign ministry on Wednesday said the death toll from the sinking of a ship carrying refugees in Lake Van, Turkey, has risen to 61, and 34 of whom are Afghan nationals.
Foreign Ministry spokesman, Gran Hivad said 17 bodies have been transported to the country so far and the bodies of six others will be transported to Kabul this evening.
He told a news conference that the bodies of six other victims would be transferred to Kabul tomorrow. He added that the bodies of the other five victims were buried in Van, Turkey, at the request of their families.
Hivad said that since the sinking of a ship carrying refugees in Lake Van, Turkey, the efforts of the Ministry and the Afghan Embassy in Ankara have continued to identify and transport the bodies of the Afghan citizens.
About a month ago, a ship with at least 80 refugees sank in Lake Van, Turkey. The bodies of all the victims have not yet been pulled out of the water.
