More and more women daring to drive in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW): There is an evident rise in the number of women opting for driving license in the capital Kabul.

Authorities at the Directorate of Traffic in Kabul have said women interested in driving have increased significantly. Sayed Mahbood Sadat, general director for traffic in Kabul, told Salam Watandar more than 350 women have received driving licenses after successfully passing the driving tests recently. “Driving classes for three weeks for the women are offered for free”, informed Sadat.

Some of the applicants said women should not worry about ludicrous comments by men in this regard. Lima Amiri, one of the female drivers, said when there are no male members of the family at home and there is an urgent need to drive someone to hospital or any other place, a woman who can drive comes extremely handy.

Samira Hamidi, a women activist, said regarding the female drivers that the women should be quite brave in the deeply traditional society of the country to be able to drive a car. She said the growing number of female drivers is encouraging in the male dominant society. “Still, women’s rights are not respected by the men, the patriarchal society has caused difficulty for female drivers as well”, believed Hamidi.
