KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Hundreds of civil society activist and political figures gathered in Kandahar on Sunday to denounce the ‘disrespect’ to former president Hamid Karzai on Friday.
Representatives from Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand and Zabul provinces took part in the gathering. The Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah was also criticized by the moot over its alleged endeavors to seek power and perks.
On Friday, during a ceremony to mark the death anniversary of Burhanuddin Rabbani, a man stood from his chair in the hall and repeatedly chanted: “Death to Karzai!”
In his response, the former president appreciated the man for speaking his heart out. Karzai charged the U.S. for dividing the Afghans. Atta Mohammad Noor, acting governor of Balkh province condemned the man for ‘disrespecting’ Karzai. Noor, chief executive of the Jamiat-e-Islami party said he and his party have a great deal of respect for Karzai.
On Sunday, members of the moot in Kandahar however, charged that a number of individuals seek more power and perks, and in the meantime they are creating hatred among the citizens. Fida Mohammad, member of the Kandahar provincial council said on the occasion that the government should address the people’s concerns in this regard. Protestors also blocked Kabul-Kandahar highway to record their protest against the ‘planed act of disrespect’ to the former president.
